  Carol Bessent Hayman is Poet Laureate of Beaufort and Carteret County. Carol Bessent Hayman assumed the title of poet laureate of the coastal village of Beaufort in 1989.
She said she thinks her town was the first in the state to have a poet laureate. That goes for Carteret County, too, which bestowed the title upon her in 1993.

Carl Bessent Hayman is the author of many published poems. She writes an annual Christmas poem for Carteret County residents, organizes readings and writes poems about Beaufort.
